Kundli matching online for NRIs — what real Guna Milan checks, and why the 36-point score is only the start

For families across the diaspora, kundli matching is usually the one piece of the tradition everyone still insists on — and the one most often done badly. A quick online tool returns a number out of 36 and a verdict. That number is real, but it is the first step of a proper match, not the last, and treating it as the whole answer is how good matches get rejected and poor ones get approved.

What Ashtakoot Guna Milan actually scores

The 36-point system compares eight kootas — attributes derived almost entirely from the two Moon nakshatras: Varna (1 point), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8). Eighteen or above is traditionally acceptable; twenty-four and above is considered strong. Because it rests on the Moon alone, it measures emotional and temperamental compatibility — nothing about timing, longevity or the couple's individual promise for marriage.

The three doshas that override the score

The majority of "the kundlis don't match" verdicts delivered by a score alone dissolve when the cancellations are actually checked. If you have been told a match fails and no one discussed pariharas, the reading is incomplete.

What a full match adds beyond the score

A competent compatibility reading places both birth charts side by side: each person's 7th house and its lord, Venus and Jupiter in each chart, the two Navamshas, and — critically — each person's dasha timeline. Two charts that score 30/36 can still describe very different marriage timing, and two that score 20 can be more durable than the number suggests. The score tells you whether the temperaments align; the charts tell you what the marriage will actually be like.

Practical notes for matching across time zones

Birth details entered in the wrong time zone shift the Moon nakshatra and can change the Guna score outright. Always enter the birth place and local birth time, never a converted time. If either partner was born outside India, the sidereal calculation still applies — the zodiac does not change with geography — but the software must know the actual coordinates and the historical time zone rules for that place and year.

Your chart answers this precisely.

Frequently asked

Is 18 out of 36 enough for marriage?

Eighteen is the traditional threshold for an acceptable match. It is a floor, not a verdict: a score above 18 with an uncancelled Nadi dosha needs a closer look, while a score of 16 with strong 7th houses and compatible dashas can be a better match than the number implies.

Both of us are manglik. Is that a problem?

Classically it is the standard resolution — matched intensity rather than doubled affliction. Many traditions consider two manglik charts a good pairing precisely because neither partner's Mars overwhelms the other's.

We were born in different countries. Does matching still work?

Yes. The method is identical; only the input changes. Use each person's actual birth place and local time, and make sure the tool applies the correct time zone and daylight-saving rules for that location and year.

Can kundli matching predict divorce?

It can identify friction points and periods of strain in each chart's dasha timeline, and doshas that historically correlate with separation. It cannot predict the decisions two adults will make. Read it as a map of where care is needed, not a forecast of outcome.
