Career questions are where Jyotish gets genuinely technical, because profession is not one factor — it is a synthesis: the 10th house (karma sthana), its lord's placement, the planets occupying and aspecting it, the D10 divisional chart, and the karakas Saturn (work itself), Mercury (commerce), Sun (authority) and Jupiter (counsel).
Start with the 10th lord's house
The single highest-yield question: where did your 10th lord go? Its house colours the career's arena. In the 12th — foreign lands, hospitals, research, behind-the-scenes systems. In the 2nd — finance, food, speech-driven work. In the 7th — client-facing partnership work. This one placement, read with its sign and conjunctions, usually explains more of a person's résumé than any personality test.
Job vs business
The classical discriminators: strong Saturn and a fixed-sign emphasis favour salaried service and institutions; strong Mars/Rahu with movable signs and a linked 7th house (the marketplace) favour independent business; Mercury bridging both suggests trade, brokerage, consulting. The 6th house (service) versus 7th (trade) balance is the tie-breaker most astrologers use.
When will it rise? Dashas and the double transit
Career peaks arrive in the dashas of the 10th lord, planets IN the 10th, or a yogakaraka — confirmed when Saturn and Jupiter's transits jointly touch the 10th house or its lord. Promotions, breakthrough roles and successful launches cluster in those windows. Equally useful in reverse: a flat stretch during an unrelated dasha is the chart saying consolidate, don't force it.
The D10 (Dashamsha) check
The D10 chart zooms into public life specifically. Its ascendant lord and strongest planet describe the fine grain of profession — the difference between “medicine” and “surgery”, “finance” and “trading”. A career verdict that never opened the D10 is a first draft.
